Twist of Tradition: Hands-On Challah

Slow down and savor the moment. Step out of the week’s hustle and into the rhythm of Shabbat with challah braiding – where tradition meets community in the most delicious way. As we braid the bread dough, we’ll weave our connections, stories and a touch of joy into every strand.

Braid your own challah to take home and bake, filling your kitchen with the comforting aroma of tradition.

Drop in on the fourth Friday for a hands-on experience. Each month offers a fresh twist with new shapes, seasonal flavors and creative braids, while the classics you love are always on hand.  Challah dough is made by Grand Bakery.

August 21 – Back to School, Start of Elul

As summer gives way to new routines and a new school year, braid intention into every loaf. August welcomes the Hebrew month of Elul, a season of reflection, return, and sweet beginnings. Explore flavors that capture the spirit of the season like apple and cinnamon, honey, fig and rosemary, or pomegranate. Feeling adventurous? Try cardamom and date, tahini and chocolate, or a swirl of black sesame and golden sprinkles. Whether you’re marking the start of a school year, settling into a new rhythm, or simply welcoming the season ahead, your challah is a delicious way to begin. 

September 25 – Latin Heritage with Jewtina y Co + Olamim

In celebration of Latin Heritage Month, we’re partnering with Jewtina y Co. and Olamim to bring the flavors, music, and traditions of Latin Jewish life to this month’s challah gathering. Explore a specialty menu of toppings inspired by Latin cuisines – like sweet dulce de leche, toasted coconut & lime, roasted corn and cotija, and cacao nibs – while enjoying lively family music with Verónica Freidkes.

Jewitina y Co. is a global nonprofit celebrating, elevating, and expanding Latin-Jewish community through cultural programming, education, leadership development, and storytelling.  

Olamim is a Bay Area nonprofit cultivating belonging for Latin Jewish families through intergenerational programs rooted in Jewish learning, Spanish language, Latin culture, and nature. 

October 23 – Fall Harvest

Fall has arrived, and with it comes a fresh harvest of comforting flavors. This month, we’re celebrating the season by filling our challah with ingredients inspired by crisp afternoons, orchard visits, cozy kitchens, and the abundance of autumn.

Mix up seasonal toppings and fillings like pumpkin spice swirl, maple, cinnamon apple, roasted garlic and rosemary, sage, toasted pumpkin seeds, and cranberry orange. Come ready to experiment, braid, and take home a loaf that tastes like fall. 

November – Mizrachi Heritage Month x JIMENA 

December 18 – Hanukkah
