The Kinks: The Quirkiest British Invasion Band

Rock historian and author Richie Unterberger spotlights film clips featuring the Kinks, one of the greatest rock bands in their prime. Starting as a raw British Invasion band in the mid-1960s, they developed a knack for sharp witted social commentary, paced by singer-songwriter Ray Davies and his fiery lead guitarist brother Dave Davies. The program will cover classics such as “You Really Got Me,” “All Day and All of the Night,” “A Well Respected Man,” “Sunny Afternoon,” “Waterloo Sunset,” as well as other highlights from their work in the 1960s and early 1970s. And since June is pride month special shout out their epic 1970 hit “Lola” which is lauded as one of the earliest commercially successful LGBTQ recordings.  
 
Rock historian Richie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books, including volumes on the Beatles, the Who, the Velvet Underground, Bob Marley, and 1960s folk-rock. He teaches courses on rock and soul music history at several Bay Area colleges. His latest book, San Francisco: Portrait of a City, was published by Taschen in 2022.
