Pattern Play Drawing Workshop with Ronit Shalem

Step into a unique hands-on drawing workshop with Roots & Wings: Textures of a Migratory Life artist Ronit Shalem. We will work directly with ink, pencil, and textured mark making tools to build your own layered compositions. 

Bring a photo of a meaningful patterned object such as a scarf, rug, tile, or family textile as your starting point. After observing details from Shalem’s work and your chosen pattern, we will sketch, repeat motifs, and experiment with line and surface to build imagery connected to memory, place, and movement. 

We will share process and ideas along the way and leave with a finished drawing on archival paper, practical techniques for creating texture and pattern, and new ways to translate personal stories into visual form.  

No prior art experience needed.

ABOUT THE ARTIST 

Ronit Shalem is a visual artist who blends storytelling, motif, and layered texture. Originally from Tel Aviv, Israel and now based in Northern California, she works with layered textures, animals, and repeated shapes to create imaginative worlds that feel both playful and reflective. For Shalem, art is a way to process life and hold its contradictions with care, exploring the balance between holding on and moving forward.
