Infused Oils Workshop with Naomi Stein

Hanukkah invites us to celebrate the blessings of oil and light, sources of resilience that have carried folks through long, dark winters. For centuries, Jews have turned to infused oils for healing, beauty, protection and ritual. From the glow of candles to foods fried golden, to special oils for the Hanukkah and the heart, this season reminds us of the nourishment, care and joy oil brings.

Lead by Jewish Ethnobotany educator and founder of Balebuste Botanicals, Naomi Stein, we’ll create a cold infusion of Cedar & Rosemary Oil with elements that have significant history in Jewish tradition for protection, learn about our sacred texts about anointing and explore the meaning and practice for ourselves.

Naomi will share best practices for infusing resins, branches, leaves and flowers, and explore the folk tradition of blessing oils with psalms. In addition to the learning with slides and the hands-on time with herbs, there will be time for individuals to work with the oil, to meditate and cultivate kavannah (holy/whole intention). In addition to this experience, inspiration and knowledge, you will receive a few small vials of infused oils especially for you, made with Naomi’s homegrown, organic herbs along with her stories of how these plants’ history intertwines with our own.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

Naomi Stein of Balebuste Botanicals creates educational experiences that weave together Jewish tradition, ethnobotany, and interactive learning. A seasoned keynote speaker featured by national organizations including the National Science Foundation and the Association of Science and Technology Centers, Naomi offers lectures and hands-on workshops ranging from the botanical roots of Jewish holidays to Jewish foodways, magic, and plant memory. She delights in guiding participants through meaningful “make and take” activities — like infusing oils for Hanukkah or crafting Jewish amulets — and has taught widely across Bay Area JCCs, synagogues, and beyond. Closest to her heart is the Old World Plant Project, preserving and sharing Shoah survivors’ plant memories for future generations.
