Activist Artists: The Social Practice of Art

Many artists today practice their art outside the museum, aiming to use their art skills to make a positive social contribution. These Social Practice artists share a postmodern ethos: everyday living, community work, relationships, organizing and other often-overlooked efforts are part of artmaking and are as significant as the creation of art objects. Learn about this exciting trend in contemporary art in the work of Mark Bradford, Judy Chicago, Theaster Gates, Suzanne Jackson, Suzanne Lacy, and Vik Muniz.   

Avril Angevine is an arts lecturer with a particular interest in modern, contemporary, and California art. She speaks on many subjects at various locations in the Bay Area, including numerous OLLI programs and the Fromm Institute at USF. Avril has a BA in English and an MA in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley and taught English and Humanities at local colleges. She is also a museum guide at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, and the Oakland Museum of California.
