Summer of Soulstice: Soul Music of the Late 1960s

Can’t get enough soul music? This presentation highlights rare, filmed performances of soul stars featured in the 2021 Summer of Soul documentary. The 2021 Summer of Soul documentary presented performances by top soul greats at the 1969 Harlem summer festival. Rock and soul music historian Richie Unterberger presents and discusses late-’60s film clips, none of which are included in the documentary, of stars who appear in the film.  

Groove on groundbreaking performances by the 1969 versions of Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Sly Stone, the 5th Dimension, David Ruffin, Hugh Masekela, the Chambers Brothers, Nina Simone, B.B. King, the Staple Singers, and others, some of whom were early in their careers.

Richie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books, including volumes on the Beatles, the Who, the Velvet Underground, Bob Marley, and 1960s folk-rock. He’s presented events on rock and soul history at the JCCSF for ten years and teaches non-credit adult and community education courses on music history in colleges throughout the Bay Area, including San Francisco State and the University of San Francisco. His latest book, which was published by Taschen in 2022, is San Francisco: Portrait of a City.
