Erev Juneteenth returns to the JCCSF for an evening rooted in legacy and love – with food, live performance and a discussion that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States while honoring and celebrating black history and culture through a Jewish lens.  Featuring the culinary magic of Chef Michael Twitty and the soaring gospel music of Joshua Nelson, the Prince of Kosher Gospel, this Juneteenth will be a night of communal joy and liberation, a gathering in the spirit of resistance and the triumph of the human spirit. Come be fed by the culture and fired up for freedom.

Michael W. Twitty is a noted culinary and cultural historian, award-winning author of The Cooking Gene and Koshersoul, and the creator of Afroculinaria, the first blog devoted to African American historic foodways and their legacies. He has been honored by FirstWeFeast.com as one of the twenty greatest food bloggers of all time, and named one of the “Fifty People Who Are Changing the South” by Southern Living and one of the “Five Cheftavists to Watch” by TakePart.com. He has appeared throughout the media, including on NPR’s The Splendid Table, and has given more than 250 talks in the United States and abroad. His work has appeared in Ebony, the Guardian, and on NPR.org. He is also a Smith fellow with the Southern Foodways Alliance, a TED fellow and speaker, and the first Revolutionary in Residence at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

Joshua Nelson, the self-proclaimed “Prince of Kosher Gospel” brings his extraordinary message of hope, unity and spirituality through kosher gospel, a marriage of African-American spiritual styles with Jewish liturgical music. Frequently compared to the legendary Mahalia Jackson, Nelson’s muscular voice and commanding stage presence have made him a festival favorite across North America and far beyond. He’s performed for presidents and prime ministers, congregations, and major concert venues —and for Oprah, who named him a “Next Big Thing.”  He has sung with stars from Aretha Franklin and Wynton Marsalis to the Klezmatics, and served as the subject of the award-winning documentary Keep on Walking. Nelson’s albums include Hebrew Soul (2004) and Mi Chamocha (2005).
