The Q: Queer Jewish Teen Group

The Q is a fun and inclusive peer-led group that encourages teens, grades 8 - 12, to explore LGBTQ+ themes through a Jewish lens. Since its founding in 2012, The Q has provided support and community to teens from all over the Bay Area, and has been honored with an award for Jewish impact from the JCC Association of North America.

Teens of all religions and backgrounds are welcome to join!

In addition to monthly hangouts, The Q hosts a variety of events, including film screenings, retreats, intergenerational It Gets Better dinners and a Pride Prom. See what's coming up next.

Become a Leader
The Q is currently seeking self-motivated LGBTQ+ high school students to be group leaders. This role is perfect for teens who are passionate about creating safe, inclusive social spaces for their peers. Responsibilities include:

  • Planning one event a month, and up to three large-scale events each year
  • Driving membership and participation with social media outreach
  • Actively leading events: discussion facilitation, activity planning, ice breakers
  • Brainstorming event themes

The Q is a peer-led group based at the JCCSF and supported by our Teen Outreach Coordinator. We currently have three openings for volunteer group leaders. If interested, please contact Jane Davis at or 415.292.1104.

In his recent Arts & Ideas talk (recommended for viewers 18 and up) sex advice columnist and New York Times bestselling author Dan Savage explains the crucial role of peer sex educators:

During his visit to the JCCSF, Savage took the time to meet with a group of teen leaders who are training to be sex-positive peer educators. “It was a night filled with great advice and laughter, and it was also part of a larger conversation regarding healthy relationships and sex positivity,” says Christy Shirilla, JCCSF Teen Program Coordinator.
