Pilates FAQ

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of body conditioning that helps build flexibility; long, lean muscles; and strength and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips and back. The Pilates set of exercises emphasizes spinal and pelvic alignment, and breathing to relieve stress and allow deep oxygen flow to muscles. The result is a strong core and improved coordination, posture, balance and overall muscle tone.

Pilates' exercise system allows for exercises to be modified in range of difficulty from beginning to advanced. It enhances core strength and brings increased flexibility, balance and agility. Pilates benefits all individuals, since the intensity of the exercises can be increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises

What is the difference between Pilates mat classes, Pilates reformer classes and private training?

Pilates mat classes
are offered in the Mind-Body Studio in the Fitness Center. All of the exercises focus on conscious movement while maintaining posture described as a neutral spine. These exercises are done lying on the floor on your back or stomach, kneeling or lying on your side. In Pilates mat classes, instructors may add props such as a Pilates ring, foam roller or small ball to increase the level of challenge. Pilates mat classes are included in your Fitness Center Membership – along with our other Mind-Body programs including Feldenkrais, Tai Chi, Qi Gong and various yoga offerings.

Pilates reformer classes are offered in our dedicated Pilates Studio, located through the entrance on Presidio Avenue at California Street. You may also enter through the Community Table café during open hours, as posted on the door. All reformer classes are taught on the reformer, the name of the machine used to perform the exercises. Many would say using the Pilates reformer transforms your body. Pilates reformer classes are small group training classes offering clients more personalized attention in a setting of 1 instructor per 5 students. JCCSF Fitness Center members receive a discounted rate to attend these classes.

Pilates private training and duet training are also offered in our Pilates Studio. Private training programs give you the opportunity to work on your specific fitness needs with the foundation and focus on Pilates movements. JCCSF Fitness Center members receive a discounted rate.
