Since rock erupted on the music scene, Jews have been crucial to the genre’s evolution as songwriters and performers. For “Blue Suede Jews,” author and music historian Richie Unterberger presents and discusses vintage film clips of major Jewish rock performers of the 1960s and 1970s. Greats including Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King, Lesley Gore, Peter Green of the original Fleetwood Mac, Manfred Mann, Leonard Cohen, and others, who may surprise you, will be presented.
Richie Unterberger is the author of numerous rock history books, including volumes on the Beatles, the Who, the Velvet Underground, Bob Marley, and 1960s folk-rock. He teaches courses on rock and soul music history at several Bay Area colleges. His latest book, San Francisco: Portrait of a City, was published by Taschen earlier this year.
