Photography and Multimedia

Put your passion for photography into focus. Learn the fundamentals, from buying the right photography equipment to taking pictures at night. Study photo composition; go on special field trips with the instructor and learn how to capture photos in the outdoors and at night while enjoying time with friends and classmates.

Requirements:
All basic photography classes require a digital camera with some manual controls or a digital SLR.
Photography II classes require taking Digital Photography I or approval from the instructor.

Digital Photo: Techniques & Aesthetics (RPHOTOS2)

This course introduces creative and technical strategies for those who want more creative control over the use of their camera. Learn the basics of camera operation, various auto-exposure modes, shutter speed, aperture and focal lengths. Discuss various shooting modes, plus the benefits of manual exposure. Through a number of creative shooting projects, learn approaches to composition, perspective, color, tone, and visual communication of concepts. Students will create new images and share these for group discussions. You'll get lots of feedback!

Digital Photography II (RPHOTOS3)

In this five-session workshop, students gain greater command of the camera and increase the effectiveness of their picture making. Create photographs that build upon fundamental techniques, while exploring visual and creative themes. Learn the benefits of manual exposure control, better understand available light and flash lighting, and explore approaches to night photography with a field trip to Sutro Baths. Learn how to use readily available software to develop and refine your photographs. Develop a final set of images that explore a unified theme or elaborate on a personally meaningful subject.

Landscape Studies in Photography (RPHOTOS4)

Photography has always had a strong role in documenting the landscapes that surround, amaze, comfort or baffle us. In this two-session workshop, students will be introduced to major concepts and trends in landscape photography while receiving practical instruction and tips in the field. In the first session, the group photographs the rich and diverse landscapes of Sutro Baths and Lands End, during the golden hour, as the light shifts. In the second session, one week later, we review the new work produced by instructor and students, and discuss further topics in landscape studies.

Requirements: digital camera and the ability to capture an image with good exposure; USB flash drive; basic computer skills. Recommended: tripod.
