Tuv Ha-Aretz

JCCSF is beginning its first season as part of Hazon's national Jewish CSA program, with support from EcoJews of the Bay and Congregation Emanu-El.

Tuv Ha-Aretz: Hazon's Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) Program enables the Jewish community to support local, sustainable agriculture. It is the first Jewish CSA Project in North America, where individuals pre-purchase a share of a farmer’s produce for an entire season. In addition to guaranteeing the farmer a secure market, it gives members access to local, organic produce at competitive prices, while helping to preserve farmland and build community.

Tuv Ha-Aretz is also a platform for innovative educational and community-building programs that explore the intersection of food and Jewish tradition. Tuv Ha-Aretz provides a tangible encounter with organic and sustainable agriculture issues and serves as a catalyst for engaging and revitalizing the Jewish community.

Michael Pollan
With Dr. Dean Ornish

Michael Pollan says that instead of food, we're consuming "edible food-like substances." The Western diet has traded food for nutrients and common sense for confusion. The more we worry about nutrition, the less healthy we seem to become. Thirty years of nutritional advice has only made us sicker and fatter. Learn what Pollan offers as a simple solution to eating well. Dr. Dean Ornish is founder and president of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito.

David A. Kessler
Putting the Food Industry on Trial

Dr. Kessler, the controversial former head of the FDA who took on the big tobacco companies, now strikes out at the food industry in The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Isatiable American Appetite. Kessler reveals startling facts. Did you know that many foods are created to stimulate the appetite even after we're full and are engineered to literally melt in your mouth so that you'll eat faster and consume more calories? You may never look at restaurant chicken, often injected with sugar, salt and fat, the same way again.

Banana Slug String Band
Science, Song and Celebration

For 24 years the ecological “edu-tainment” band out of Santa Cruz has been teaching children across America through songs about conservation, reclamation and earth stewardship (Tikkun Olam). Kids love their wacky costumes and motley musical style as they play rockin’ boogies, sensitive ballads, comic rap and wild reggae. Every concert becomes a classroom of joyous music, laughter and learning. The Slugs are Earth-lovin’, toe-tappin’ science at its best.

“[The Banana Slug String Band] is the premier eco-band in the country… helping to raise the next green generation.” – Chicago Parent Magazine
